Looking around the club fair at the beginning of her freshman year at Syracuse University, Kendall Palazzi didn’t see many student organizations related to mental health resources. Seeing the gap, she started to consider forming her own club on campus.

“Talking about mental health is so important,” Palazzi said. “I get inspired when I see growth in that area, so I wanted to be a part of it.”

Living By the Ocean Has a Positive Impact on Mental Health, Study Finds

Where we live impacts the people we meet, our daily routines, the weather we experience, and even how we talk and what kinds of foods we eat. Data is now showing how living by the water can also impact our mental health and stress levels in positive ways.

Many people spend vacations by or on the water, as well as going out to the lake or ocean during the summertime, so maybe this news comes as no surprise.

A study from Health and Place revealed how exposure to bodies of water is connected to l

How an Italian Village Uses a Giant Mirror for Sunlight

Viganella, a small village in northern Italy, has only about 200 inhabitants. Located in the Antrona Valley with steep mountains that prevent sunlight from reaching the village for a 3-month period during the winter, the residents decided to build a giant mirror to curb the dreary months of darkness and isolation.

Viganella has a unique problem due to its location: for three months of the year, the residents get absolutely no sunlight in their village.

The Trio That’s Taken Over the Media This Summer

Last summer, the whole world felt the impact of Roe v. Wade being overturned by SCOTUS. For women and allies all around, this felt like a giant blow, as if we were returning to the 1910s or worse. We got tired of having to explain to people why women needed to be able to freely make decisions on their own bodies, and tired of what feels like a century long protest in the streets. We were yet again reminded that as soon as strides of progression were made for women in this country, they quickly t

The Line Between Sacred and Scared

The scene is a middle school computer lab, where about twenty-five girls aged 13 are wondering what the hell they’re about to hear. A middle-aged woman enters the room to inform the young girls about purity and abstinence. When she says the word “sex,” it comes out in an awkward, shrill whisper, as if the utterance of the word is a sin in itself. She preaches that God condemns sex before marriage. If you do not remain pure, you will get infections, hate yourself, and piss off the Holy Spirit.

XoXo, Valentine's Day (you won't be missed)

A crushed box of chalky hearts with sweet little fucking messages

For months now, drugstore aisles have overflowed with heart-shaped boxes filled with waxy-looking chocolates, obnoxious life-sized teddy bears, love-themed candies, and the cheesiest Hallmark cards–all in the name of commodified “love.” I couldn’t even buy a box of tampons without being vomited on by your cheap affection. Although I adore rom-coms, date nights, and unapologetic expressions of love, I can’t help but notice the def
